Types of Cryptocurrencies FAQ

What are the 4 types of cryptocurrency?

There is no universally agreed-upon classification, but cryptocurrencies are commonly grouped into 4 main types

  • Payment cryptocurrencies (including stablecoins) – Used as a medium of exchange
  • Utility tokens (e.g., UNI) – Provide access to specific features or services within a blockchain ecosystem (e.g., UNI, LINK).
  • NFTs – Digital assets that represent ownership of art, content, in-game items, etc.
  • Security tokens – Digital assets that represent ownership in real-world assets or companies, often regulated like traditional securities.

Each cryptocurrency has its own goal and operates in different ecosystems, and thus can be identified in a different sector.

What are the top crypto categories by market cap?

As of now, the top cryptocurrency categories by market cap include:

  • Smart Contract Platforms
  • Layer 1 (L1)
  • Proof of Work (PoW)
  • Proof of Stake (PoS)

These sectors represent the majority of the total crypto market value. Rankings may change over time because new sectors emerge and money flows into different segments of the market.

How many different cryptocurrencies are there?

According to CoinGecko, more than 13,000 active cryptocurrencies are on the market right now. This range spans from top-tier players like Bitcoin and Ethereum all the way down to low-cap, lesser-known altcoins. Each cryptocurrency comes with its own unique purpose, underlying ideology, and development team behind it.

However, this figure only represents verified cryptocurrencies that have undergone formal identification and listing processes. The reality is that there are hundreds of thousands of additional cryptocurrencies, including meme coins, experimental tokens, and speculative projects, that exist outside of these official tracking systems. Many of these unverified tokens are created on platforms like Ethereum,Solana or BNB Smart Chain, where anyone can launch a new cryptocurrency with minimal technical barriers.

The massive difference between verified and total cryptocurrency counts exists because major data providers like CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap maintain strict verification standards. Projects must demonstrate active trading pairs, legitimate development teams, and transparent tokenomics before being officially recognized and tracked.
